SA STGEC ~ SIA13: The Aging Mouth-Dysphagia (2013)

San Antonio / June, 2013 – Summer Institute on Aging: Language Pathologist Gerardo S. Gutierrez (MA, CCC-SLP) in "The Latest Findings on Dysphagia and The Mouth Aged ". Recorded in front of a live audience by pathology professionals for palliative providers.

Dysphagia is the medical term for the symptom of difficulty in swallowing. Although it is classified in "symptoms and signs" in ICD-the term is sometimes used as a condition in its own right. Patients, regardless of their age, are sometimes unaware of their dysphagia.
The word is derived from the Greek dys meaning bad or disorderly, and the root phag-meaning "to eat". It may be a sensation that suggests difficulty in passing solids or liquids from the mouth to the stomach, lack of pharyngeal sensation, or several other deficiencies of the swallowing mechanism. Dysphagia is distinguished from other symptoms, including odynophagia, which is defined as painful swallowing, and globus, which is the sensation of a lump in the throat. Psychogenic dysphagia is known as phagophobia. {Source: WikiPedia}
