Australian researchers have come up with a non-invasive ultrasound technology that clears the brain of neurotoxic amyloid plaques. Alzheimer’s disease is the result of two types of lesions, amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. The goal of treatment is to eliminate the accumulation of defective beta-amyloid and tau proteins from a patient’s brain. At present we do not have any remedy to cure or vaccinate to prevent Alzheimer’s, a disease that affects 50 million people worldwide. A focused therapeutic ultrasound is used for the purpose. The team reports fully restore memory function with zero damage to surrounding brain tissue. It is a “breakthrough” in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, I foresee a great future for this approach.
